Safety glasses are must-have eyewear for those who work in hazardous environments. Whether you work in construction, manufacturing, or other fields that can put your eye safety at risk, safety glasses protect your eyes from injuries such as dust, debris, and chemical splashes.

You can even get safety glasses with your prescription to continue to see clearly while you work. Eyesis Eyecare provides prescription safety glasses in Calgary for dangerous work or hobbies to keep your eyes safe and healthy.

What Are Safety Glasses?

Safety glasses are a type of eyewear designed to protect the eyes from hazards or injuries at work or during leisure activities. They are an essential piece of protective gear worn in various industries, ranging from construction and engineering to sports and recreation.

Safety glasses are made of special materials that can prevent flying debris, particles, and chemicals from penetrating the eyes, which can cause severe damage or even vision loss.

They can be made of a variety of materials, including:

  • Polycarbonate
  • Glass
  • Plastic
  • Hi-Vex
  • Trivex

These materials are sturdy and durable, allowing them to protect your eyes from various hazards, such as dust, debris, and chemical splashes. Moreover, some safety glasses can also protect against radiation hazards, like UV rays and infrared light.

Features of Safety Glasses

There’s a range of safety glasses available with different features and designs to suit your work or hobby’s hazards.

  • Side and top shields offer additional protection against airborne debris and particles.
  • Goggles provide a tight seal around the eyes and face for complete coverage.
  • Coatings can be added to improve visibility.

When choosing the right safety glasses, there are a couple of factors to consider, such as:

  • The type of hazard that you will be exposed to
  • The task you’ll be performing

If you’re working in an area with a lot of debris or dust, then a wraparound style of safety glasses would be appropriate. If you’re working in an environment with chemicals, safety goggles may be more appropriate.

Consulting with an eye care professional can help you identify the correct type of safety glasses for your needs and can also help you achieve the right fit and size for maximum protection.

Benefits of Prescription Safety Glasses

Prescription safety glasses provide clear vision and protection at the same time. Switching to safety glasses can be a hassle if you already wear prescription glasses. But with prescription safety glasses, you don’t have to worry about switching between regular glasses and safety glasses. You can wear them all day, knowing your eyes are always protected.

Another significant benefit of prescription safety glasses is that they fit better than generic safety glasses. When you wear regular safety glasses on top of prescription glasses, they can be uncomfortable and bulky. Prescription safety glasses are designed to fit your face specifically, providing excellent protection and improved comfort.

How Should Safety Glasses Fit?

Your optometrist can help fit your prescription safety glasses by considering your face shape, and there are some guidelines for a successful fit.

  • They should cover from the eyebrow to the cheekbone, across the bridge of the nose.
  • They should fit close to the temples and comfortably over the ears.
  • They should not cause significant obstructions to your visual field in any direction.

How to Get Prescription Safety Glasses in Calgary

If you’re interested in prescription safety glasses, the first step is to visit your optometrist. They can examine your eyes and evaluate the level of vision correction you need. Based on their evaluation, they can prescribe the proper corrective lenses.

Then, you can choose the frames that suit your style and profession. Safety glasses come in various designs, including wraparound, full-rim, and half-rim frames. You can also choose the lens colour, from clear to tinted or polarized lenses.

Your optometry team can walk you through the options and make recommendations that meet or exceed the safety guidelines set out by your profession.

Care & Maintenance of Prescription Safety Glasses

Like regular glasses, prescription safety glasses require proper care and maintenance.

  • Clean them daily following the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Avoid using paper towels or harsh chemicals that can damage or scratch the lenses.
  • Keep your glasses in their hard case when you’re not wearing them.
  • Have them adjusted regularly to maintain a safe fit.
  • Replace or repair damaged lenses or frames promptly.
  • Avoid leaving them on hot surfaces or in direct sunlight, as this can cause the frames to warp or lose shape.
