Exposure to screens that emit blue light has been linked to eye strain, headaches, blurred vision, and dry eyes. It can also affect your sleep patterns by suppressing the production of melatonin, the hormone responsible for helping you fall asleep.

Blue light glasses are designed to block or filter out blue light. Some glasses have a yellow tint or special coating that reflects the blue wavelengths, while others use special lenses that absorb these wavelengths.

How Effective Are Blue Light Glasses?

The effectiveness of blue light glasses is still being studied and debated. Some studies suggest that they can improve visual comfort and reduce eye strain in certain situations, such as working on a computer for long periods of time. However, other studies have found no significant difference in symptoms between using blue light glasses and regular glasses.

Some experts also argue that the benefits of blue light glasses may vary depending on a person’s sensitivity to blue light. For some people, wearing these glasses all the time may not make a noticeable difference, while others may experience a significant improvement in their eye comfort.

When to Wear Blue Light Glasses

Whether or not you should wear blue light glasses all the time depends on your individual needs and lifestyle. Here are some situations where wearing blue light glasses may be most beneficial:

  • When using digital devices: Spending long hours on a computer, watching TV, or scrolling your phone? Blue light glasses might help reduce eye strain and fatigue. 
  • In the evening: Blue light can disrupt sleep. Wearing blue light glasses before bed helps block it and promotes better rest. 
  • In artificial lighting: Fluorescent and LED lights emit blue light too. If you work under these lights, blue light glasses can ease their impact on your eyes. 
  • For light sensitivity or eye conditions: Blue light glasses can provide relief and protection if you’re sensitive to blue light or have conditions like cataracts or macular degeneration.

Other Ways to Reduce Blue Light Exposure

While wearing blue light glasses is an effective way to reduce your exposure to this type of light, there are also other steps you can take:

  • Adjust your device settings: Most smartphones, computers, and TVs let you adjust brightness and colour temperature (like “night shift” mode) to reduce blue light, especially in the evening. 
  • Take regular screen breaks: Every 20 minutes, look away from screens and focus on something in the distance to reduce eye strain and fatigue. 
  • Use natural light: Work near a window or spend time outside to balance artificial blue light exposure. 
  • Try blue light filters: Apply physical filters to your screens to block blue light, which is especially helpful for extended computer use. 
  • Limit screens before bed: Blue light in the evening can disrupt sleep. Avoid screens at least an hour before bedtime.

Alternatives to Blue Light Glasses

While blue light glasses can be a great tool for reducing eye strain and fatigue, they may not be the best option for everyone. Some alternative options include:

  • Anti-glare coating for regular glasses: If you already wear prescription glasses, you can ask your optometrist about adding an anti-glare coating to them. This will help reduce glare and reflections from screens, which can cause eye strain.
  • Computer glasses: These are similar to blue light glasses but are specifically designed for computer use. They have a slight magnification to help reduce eye strain and block some blue light.
  • Laser surgery for vision correction: If you have underlying eye conditions such as nearsightedness or farsightedness, laser surgery may be a long-term solution to help reduce eye strain.

Eyesis Eyecare is located in the Riverbend Shopping Centre on 18th Street SE, near the VCA Canada Riverbend Animal Hospital.

Our Clinic can accommodate wheelchair patients who can safely transfer themselves (or with their own assistant). We are unable to assist in transfers as we do not have a fully wheelchair equipped exam room/bathroom.
